20th Annual Band Classic Oct. 14th back button

White Oak High School will host its 20th Annual Band Classic Saturday, Oct. 14, at the school, located at 1001 Piney Green Rd., Jacksonville, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Thirty high school bands from all over Eastern and Central N.C. will compete, including Onslow, Craven, Carteret, Duplin, Pender, Pitt, Nash, Wake, Harnett, Johnston, Martin, Wilson, New Hanover and Beaufort.  The N.C. State University Marching Band will perform in Exhibition.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for Kindergarten – fifth grade.

A portion of the profits will go to WOHS’s Cheery Music Project. WOHS band members started Skyping with students in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya at Mashimoni after they performed a concert for them and realized they had no music classes or instruments.  They are teaching them, via Skype, how to read music.  Their mission is to raise $5,000 so they can provide the students with recorders and improve their WIFI capabilities.  This is the first phase of a three-phase project with cheerycentre.org. Cheery Children Education Centre (CCEC) is a small educational institution offering humanitarian assistance  to the poverty-stricken children in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, the largest slum in Africa by population and size.
