The third Annual Author’s Showcase provided opportunities for students to celebrate their writings and even sign a few autographs.

Students grades third through 12th are invited to write on a topic of their choice and include artwork.  Each school can submit up to six submissions meeting established standards to be published in a district book with copies provided to each school and student.  The Author’s Showcase is the book release celebration.

At the gathering at Blue Creek Elementary May 23, a few willingly shared their submissions with the audience of supporters including parents, teachers, coaches and other friends and family members. Ninth grader Isabella Murphree, a student at White Oak High School, shared a poem she wrote about her first love.  Marilyn Martin, a fourth grader at Dixon Elementary, orated her narrative about a gang’s mission to save the world.

Local author, Birdy Jones, provided some words of wisdom and hosted a question and answer session.  She encourages students who are interested in writing to read as much as they possibly can.

She talked about writing and doing. “Doing is creating and creating is succeeding; the world needs your voice,” she said.

Each year the number of students participating has increased; this year 57 OCS young authors received the compilation of all the submissions as a memento of their challenging work.
