Options for redistricting schools in Onslow County were presented to the Board of Education by district staff on Thursday, December 15th. The redistricting process is used by school districts throughout the State to balance growing and shifting student populations among school facilities. The options presented were the culmination of months of work by district staff, facility specialists, and North Carolina State’s Organizational Research and Education Department.

Student population has grown over the last several years and during the 2011-2012 school year, Onslow County Schools had seen an additional 759 students attending the schools. Future projections indicate that there will be approximately 30,000 students attending Onslow County Schools in ten years; over 5,000 additional students. “In order to maintain and improve on the quality of our instructional programs, it is important that we address overcrowding at several of our schools. The first step in this process is to make sure that we are using our existing classrooms as efficiently as possible through the redistricting process,” said Assistant Superintendent Steve Myers.

“It should be noted that this is not going to resolve all of our overcrowding issues,” stated Myers, “there are geographical areas and space constraints in some locations that can only be resolved by adding new classrooms and schools to the district”.

Following the presentation of the options to the Board, staff then presented a proposed public information and public comment plan. Nine public information sessions are currently scheduled for the month of January. At these sessions, members of the public would be invited to review the plans and assist the district in identifying the best solutions for the Board to consider. In addition, redistricting options will be posted in potentially-affected schools. Redistricting options and information are also available for review on the school system’s website link "Redistricting Study 2012."   Comments will be received at scheduled community meetings, by e-mail at redistricting2012@onslow.k12.nc.us, or by mail at:
