The Jacksonville Civitan Club is preparing a kick-off to a community service project called Boomerang Backpacks for Elementary Students. The pilot program will run from January thru May 2010. These backpacks will be given to students two Fridays a month that will be filled with nutritious snacks to eat over the weekend. The priority is to make this available every week for students. The goals of the program are to help with nutritional needs for students over the weekend and provide students with snacks to deal with hunger. Anticipated results are increased attendance rates throughout the year and improved achievement from students each day. Also we invite other organizations and/or the public to participate in this project so that we can extend the service every Friday and at each school of need. Jacksonville Civitan hosted a program to kick-off the Boomerang Project on Monday, January 11th at 12:00 at the Golden Corral on Marine Blvd. Guests will included Rose Brothers Furniture, Inc, and Onslow County Schools representatives. Rose Brothers Furniture Inc. has donated $500.00 to the project.
Locally, Jacksonville Civitan supports Special Olympics, Christmas Cheer, Carobell, PEERS, Onslow Women Shelter, SAT scholarships and others as needed.
