Onslow County Bus Driver Places First in State "Roadeo"
Mr. Angelo Caputo, a bus driver from the Swansboro area of Onslow County defeated 47 other top bus drivers to win first place in the State "Roadeo" on May 15th. Mr. Caputo took home a trophy, a $1,000 prize, and is now eligible to move on to the national competition. Onslow County Schools has never been home to a State Champion, although Mr. Bill Wadford placed 2nd in the State in 2002.
The event, held in Raleigh each year, is sponsored by the School Bus and Traffic Safety Division of the Department of Public Instruction. Top winners from each state district compete in a written test and a challenging one mile driving course complete with various obstacles.
Bus Drivers in Onslow County log a staggering 16,952 miles a day. This translates into over 3 million miles a year. The county operates 250 yellow buses in order to transport students to the various campuses throughout the county.
