Testing Information
What to Expect in High School

All students enrolled in NC schools are required to take the following assessments either with or without modifications. Below is a list of assessments administered throughout the school year. The list includes subjects tested, when they are administered, and the weight of the assessment on the student's grade.

EOG- End-of-Grade Assessments

  • ELA, Math, & 8th grade Science
  • Taken within the last 10 days of school
  • Count 20% of student's final grade

EOC- End-of-Course Assessments

  • Math I
  • Taken within the last 5 days of school
  • Counts 25% of student's final grade

NCFE- N.C. Final Exams

  • 6th, 7th, & 8th grade Social Studies
  • 6th & 7th grade Science
  • Other possible subjects (depending upon offerings at individual schools)
    • 8th grade English I, World History, Earth & Environmental Science, Math II

CTE- Career and Technical Education classes

  • i.e. Computer Skills & Applications I & II, Exploring Career Decisions
  • Taken within the last 5 days of each semester
  • Counts 20% of student's grade

NAEP- National Assessment of Educational Progress at grade 8

  • Various schools selected yearly
  • Notification will be sent home if your child's school is selected to participate

Benchmark assessments

  • Benchmark assessments will be administered throughout the school year and will take place near the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grading periods.
  • Specific dates determined by each school.
  • Subjects tested include ELA, Math, 8th grade Science, and Math I.

ACT Aspire

  • Online assessment for 8th graders only
  • Administered in the fall each year
  • Subjects tested include ELA, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing.

Notification of testing updates

  • Each school will provide parent(s)/legal guardians a listing of assessments and their prospective dates at the beginning of each school year.
  • Parent(s)/legal guardians should not schedule time away from school during testing time and should try their best to have students present and on time on testing days.

Gridded response information/testing tips

  • Some test questions on the paper-and-pencil EOG for Math and Math I assessment are gridded-response questions. These questions require students to enter a numerical answer rather than select an answer from several choices. Students are required to practice this during the school year.
