On Saturday, March 10, 2012, Onslow County Schools hosted the Coastal Region Odyssey of the Mind Tournament. Held at Northside High and Jacksonville Commons Middle Schools, we welcomed 41 schools – most with multiple teams – from 36 counties of Eastern North Carolina. Odyssey of the Mind is based on problem-solving, team effort, perseverance and sportsmanship. Competitive activities are performed as a team in five different areas, or “problems.” Teams of students devise creative and unusual ways to come up with a solution. While winners are determined, and will advance to the next level, the greatest value, according to the Coastal Region Co-Directors, is “in the process rather than the result.”

Onslow County had 18 schools participate in the tournament, representing elementary (10), middle (6) and high school (2) levels. The first and second place teams in each division advance to the North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament to be held on March 31, 2012 at Wingate University.
