Keep Onslow Beautiful Environmental Award

A New Bridge Middle School teacher, Bill Gerichten, has been selected by Keep Onslow Beautiful as the winner of the 28th Annual Robert L. Franck Outstanding Educator Award.  The award is given to an educator that demonstrates awareness of the environmental needs of the community and has put forth personal effort to preserve and protect it for all citizens. This award is given to an educator who has done an outstanding job of promoting the effort of environmental stewardship at the school level.  New Bridge Middle is honored to have Mr. Gerichten as a teacher.

From the nominator…

“Over 10 years ago, before it was mandated, before it was "fashionable," Mr. Bill Gerichten, teacher at New Bridge Middle School, began a school project that has blossomed into a way of life for the students and staff at New Bridge.  This former Marine Lt. Colonel began a recycling effort in order to make a positive impact on our environment.  His effort has resulted in hundreds of young people learning what it means to be a good steward of our Earth.  He spends many hours each week personally sorting and organizing materials for our recycling effort.  He distributes bins, he helps our students monitor what they throw away versus recycle, and he leads our effort to make a difference.  It is because of his efforts, leadership and vision that New Bridge has the most successful and continuous recycling program in our system.”
